Join us for storm drain stenciling

On Tuesday, June 28, the West End Neighborhood Association is having a training session by Doug Roncaroti from the City’s Water Resources Dept. on stenciling storm drains. We last did this project around 7-8 years ago and in the interim the messages have worn away or been paved over, so it’s time for another round of stenciling.

This project was initiated by the Friends of Casco Bay and the stencil says “No Dumping – Drains to Casco Bay” and includes a graphic of a lobster or a fish. We”ll be running our event from July-September and have teams of 3-4 people going out for an hour or so until we get all the drains in our neighborhood association’s area freshened up. The best time to stencil is in the early morning or late afternoon/early evening when there’s less traffic. The City of Portland provides all the equipment.

This is a fun activity, it’s outdoors, you may meet new people, and you’re doing something productive and tangible for our environment. We’re building up our list of volunteers, so if you’re interested in joining us, just let me know. It’s not a big commitment, you can just jump in a couple of times when you see a spot on the schedule that works for you.

If you’re interested in the training session at a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, just show up at the corner of Salem/Clark. There are several drains located close by and you can see what’s involved and meet Doug.

If you have questions, please send them and we’ll get back to you.
