Do you have an idea for a project to make your neighborhood more socially connected, sustainable, resilient, or inclusive? Do you need help covering the costs? The City of Portland’s Sustainability Office is currently accepting applications for our first round of Neighborhood Mini Grants until August 30, 2025, at 5:00 PM EST.

Mini Grant Project Ideas

Looking for some inspiration for your Sustainable Neighborhoods Mini Grant project idea? Check out some of the ideas and photos below:

Community Green Spaces:

  • Neighborhood community raised garden bed installation
  • Convert neighbor’s lawns into rain gardens
  • Monarch releases at a community garden
  • Build a pollinator garden
  • Neighborhood trail work or invasive species removal event
  • Neighborhood tree planting or native seed planting

Skill Building & Workshops:

  • Bike repair and maintenance workshop
  • DIY rain barrel / rainwater harvesting workshop
  • DIY home weatherization workshop
  • Composting workshop

Community Events (Art, Food, Culture):

  • Neighborhood craft night (i.e. painting night, upcycled crafts, collage night, homemade candle making etc.)
  • Neighborhood book club (i.e. Climate Change & Resilience Book Club)
  • Build a little free library
  • Neighborhood potluck, block party, or community meal/picnic
  • Neighborhood game night

Activities & Movement:

  • Community hike or nature walk
  • Neighborhood bike ride (i.e. bike rentals, bike lights)
  • Neighborhood group exercise (i.e. yoga class, dance night, pickup soccer, meditation, etc.)
