In May, City Councilors restored $30,000 to Portland Public Library in order to keep Reiche branch library open for at least one more year. In exchange, PPL administrators promised that the year would be one of systemic planning with community input.
In August, PPL announced a series of "neighborhood meetings...as part of its ongoing planning process [and said that] representatives from the Library staff and Board will be at each event to speak with community members." According to PPL, these "meetings are designed to share the status of current Library planning and projects and to hear comments from Portland citizens to inform ongoing Library direction."
WENA is working to ensure cross-representation at each meeting so that discussions will be City- and not neighborhood-based. It is hoped that residents of all neighborhoods will attend the meeting closest to their homes and as many other sessions as possible.

THINK. GO. GET IT. is a scavenger hunt throughout the City of Portland. Teams of two will solve clues and traverse the city using only their own two feet and/or public transit. It is a day of trivia, exercise, challenge, competition (if you choose), memories, and best of all it is fun! Email or phone Crystal Barone (775-0105 x135) to sign up or volunteer. |
Wednesday, Nov. 5, 7 p.m.
Public library meeting
Main Library (Monument Square) |
PPL has described the November 5 session as a "final, all neighborhood meeting." WENA is working to ensure that this will not be a "final" meeting but rather an additional step in the process toward establishing a real dialogue among the City's residents, PPL administrators and trustees and elected officials.
